Research-backed benefits of CBD, CBG, and CBN

Cannabinoids such as CBD (cannabidiol), CBG (cannabigerol), and CBN (Cannabinol) have been the subject of numerous studies examining their potential therapeutic benefits. Among the most promising of these potential benefits are their reported ability to reduce anxiety, improve mental function, and improve sleep.

Reducing Anxiety

One of the most commonly reported benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids is their ability to reduce anxiety. Studies have shown that CBD can reduce anxiety in individuals with social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A case series published in 2019 found anxiety scores decreased within the first month of CBD use in nearly 80% of patients.  Additionally, a study of individuals with PTSD found that CBD reduced anxiety symptoms and improved sleep quality

CBG has also been shown to have potential benefits for anxiety. In a 2016 study, researchers found that CBG had anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects in rats. While more research is needed to understand CBG's effects on anxiety in humans, these initial findings are promising.

Managing Pain

One of the more popular uses of CBD is in support of pain management.

Preclinical and clinical studies have indicated a potential benefit of CBD use in chronic pain associated with multiple conditions (medicalnewstoday.com).

In a mixed cohort of patients suffering from intractable pain due to multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, brachial plexus injury, and limb amputation, CBD treatment significantly reduced pain on a visual analog scale (Wade et al., 2003)
CBD was also seemingly effective in treatment of chronic pain associated with kidney transplantation and when given topically to patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy of their lower extremities (Cuñetti et al., 2018; Xu et al., 2019)
As well, in patients with fibromyalgia, CBD treatment decreased pain by more than 30% in significantly more patients than placebo (Van De Donk et al., 2019)
A New Zealand study on the safety of CBD treatment in 400 non-cancer chronic pain patients indicated its safety for prolonged use, which was accompanied by self-reported improvements in pain and quality of life (Gulbransen et al., 2020)

Improving Mental Function

Cannabinoids have also shown potential in improving mental function, particularly in individuals with neurological disorders. In a 2016 study, researchers found that CBD improved cognitive function in individuals with schizophrenia. Additionally, a study of individuals with Parkinson's disease found that CBD improved quality of life and sleep, as well as motor function.

Recent research published in 2022 has identified CBN can act as a potent neuroprotector, mitigating aging related brain disease including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease.

In addition, CBD's benefits in reducing epileptic seizures are well known and established. In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of CBD under the brand name Epidiolex to treat seizures resulting from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome in patients at least 2 years old.

Improving Sleep

Finally, cannabinoids such as CBD have also been shown to have potential benefits for improving sleep. In addition to the aforementioned study on PTSD and sleep quality, a study of individuals with insomnia found that CBD improved sleep quality and duration. Additionally, a study of individuals with chronic pain found that CBD improved sleep quality and reduced the need for pain medication.

Anecdotally some people feel CBN also brings on sleepiness.  While there are no completed studies substantiating that at this point, it is currently a popular approach to aiding better sleep cycles.

Other Reported Benefits

While more research is needed, other reported benefits include:

  • Anti-inflammation
  • Help in pain management
  • Improvement of muscle soreness
  • Improvement in symptoms of depression
  • CBN for controlling inflammation
  • General well-being

Conclusion

Cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, and CBN have shown potential in reducing anxiety, improving mental function, and improving sleep. While more research is needed to fully understand their effects and potential side effects, the initial findings are promising. If you are interested in using cannabinoid products for any of these purposes, it's important to speak with a healthcare provider first to determine if they are safe and appropriate for you. Additionally, it's important to purchase from reputable sources to ensure the purity and potency of the products. With proper precautions and responsible use, cannabinoid products can be a safe and effective addition to your wellness routine.
